Install Backtrack 3 Beta to HDD
If you went out and picked up the new beta of BT3 and you want to install it to your HDD, here's a quick and easy way to do it.

1.) Go download the BT3 iso and burn it to cd using your favorite image burning program, I use ImgBurn, then boot it up..
2.) We now need to create and format a partition to install BT3 on, I used my entire disk but you can split your disk up if you want a dual boot system. It is easier to install Windows first, then install Linux if you are going for a *Nix & Windows dual configuration. You will also need to manually edit lilo.conf to be able to boot back into Windows. Unfortunately I couldn't find a graphical partition editor on this version of back track so we will have to install one manually. If you are more comfortable using the command line fdisk to edit you HDD then you can follow this guide from the offensive security website http://www.offensive-security.com/documentation/backtrack-hd-install.pdf
Download the Slackware package for parted and qtparted and save them in your home folder e.g. /root:
parted
qtparted
Open up a console and in the directory the downloaded files are in type:
#pkgtool
The package tool will open, select current directory, and yes for both packages to install them. We now have qtparted installed.
Make sure that the HDD is not mounted by typing:
#mount
/dev/hda1 on / type auto (rw)
This shows me that I have hda1 mounted so I would type:
#umount /dev/hda1
Once everything is unmounted open up qtparted by typing qtparted from the command line. With qtparted open select your disk and allocate your partition (I would give it a minimum of 10GB) and format it for ext3, commit changes.
Now create your mount point if not already present and remount your partition (/dev/hda1 in my case):
# mkdir /mnt/hda1
# mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/hda1
Now navigate from the task bar to backtrack >> Install Backtrack and verify the following:
"Source" should be set automatically
"Install backtrack to" should point to your mounted HDD (/mnt/hda1)
"Write new MBR to" should be set automatically (/dev/hda)
"Installation Method" set to Real
"Restore original MBR after LILO" uncheck this even if you have another operating system on your machine.
Click install and if it is successful then you now have BT3 installed on your HDD.
If you are going to Dual Boot:
Add the following lines to the end of lilo.conf
#Windows Configuration
other = /dev/hda1
label = WindowsXP
table = /dev/hda
Make sure that you change the partitions to reflect you system!
Now at the command prompt type:
# lilo
Reboot without the CD!

Hey did you try: #lspci and
Hey did you try:
#lspci
and looking to see if your sound card is recognized?
If it is, figure out what your sound card is and look and see if it supported by Slax. There may be a generic module you can load for it; but your first step is seeing what you have.
hi well i did try alsamixer
hi well i did try alsamixer also alsaconf i did take look at f2 manue help while on alsamixer tried but no sound yet i looked at line i saw few people got the same problem they still looking for sort it out

So you can see XP trying to
So you can see XP trying to boot right? Can you hit F8 and boot from safe mode? Did you ever have 2 installs of Windows existing at the same time on the machine? There must be something corrupt related to windows, see if you can mount your C:\ drive from backtrack and let me know.

Installing BackTrack 3 FINAL
Installing BackTrack 3 FINAL on your HDD and lilo's configuration :
http://kin.calvin.free.fr/blog/?p=16
yeah I tried what you said
yeah I tried what you said to find the install under backtrack in kde start and instructions below, but still couldn't find it. any help would be great.
Try this open up a console
Try this open up a console and type:
kmdr-executor /usr/share/slax/BT3.kmdr
if that doesn't work try:
kmdr-executor /usr/share/slax/slax-install.kmdr
Still no luck? try:
whereis BT3.kmdr (to see if it is in another directory)
If you cant find it still I will PM the file to you
r00tk1ll
I go to backtrack/ KDE start
I go to backtrack/ KDE start menu button > backtrack but there i can't see at all the option to install backtrack.
So you just don't see it
So you just don't see it there at all? It didn't minus over to the side did it? If you can get to the console I think you can relaunch it by typing "kmenu"
Let me know
backtrack/ KDE start menu
backtrack/ KDE start menu button > backtrack > install backtrack
I can't find it in Backtrack 3 final.
No problem man, thats what I
No problem man, thats what I started this site for. Anyways I heard of that "no implementation" error before from other forums, which apparently is false, I mean why would a partition editor that is supposed to work with windows not support NTFS? Hopefully others will benefit from your problem and solution when they run into that error. See ya.

Not sure if this information
Not sure if this information helps, QTparted is not chucking up the errors it actually thinks it’s done everything correctly & states it’s completed the task perfectly, it’s the terminal window in the background giving me these messages, Yes I know that the terminal window outputs the events from qtparted but it doesn't specify which drive its commenting on giving misleading information.
I followed your other methodology to see if it would work as I fired up QTParted I still received the Warning: Unable to open /dev/hda read-write message, after selecting the free space to partition as EXT3
It still stated with "No implementation: support for opening NTFS File system is not implemented", I continued anyway i pushed the commit button it then stated the "no implementation error" twice followed by "Error File system has incompatible features enabled". I continued anyway I followed everything as I would & IT WORKED!! Even after all of the errors not sure why? I'm guessing that dev/hda1 on my machine is the bt3 CD and it kept remarking it was read-only, other then getting a few HAL.conf errors which I fixed its running PERFECT Thanks r00tk1ll not sure if that comment you left was intended for me but it worked.
type: whereis libparted
type:
whereis libparted (it's probably in /etc or something)
Asuming it is in the /etc directory type "ls /etc/libparted(<-Then Hit TAB). It should fill out the names of the files for you. If I remember correctly you will find a file like libparted-1.8.so.13 or something.
What ever the name is of that file type, I will assume it is libparted-1.8.so.13, type:
mv /etc/libparted-1.8.so.13 /etc/libparted-1.6.so.13
qtparted, it should start qtparted.
The whole problem is that it qtparted is looking for an older version of a library, so you just find the library it is looking for and rename it to the older version, in your case "libparted-1.6.so.13"
Let me know,
r00tk1ll
here bt ~ #
here
bt ~ # qtparted
qtparted: error while loading shared libraries: libparted-1.6.so.13: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory
What does it say when you
What does it say when you type it in the terminal? Did you install parted?
no only if i write in the
no only if i write in the terminal qtparted it don't start how must i boot can i boot copy to ram?
Ok Lets follow this
Ok Lets follow this methodology, I find it easier to just start from scratch than track down crazy errors.
1.) Download the garted live cd here http://gparted.sourceforge.net/download.php
2.) Boot up gparted and select all the partitions on the hard drive, select delete, and then apply.
3.) Now we are assuming we have deleted all the partitions, install xp as normal creating a partition of the appropriate size and format it with ntfs.
4.) Make sure that you can boot into XP and all works as expected, if not tell me the exact error output.
5.) Next lets try to install backtrack, when you get to qparted use the left over space as the ext3 partition and then follow the rest of the install procedure.
6.) if you get this far boot up and see if you get the nice lilo screen or and error.
Just explain to be what happens from this point, hopefully it will work but you know that doesn't usually happen in the tech world.

Stump again after several
Stump again after several months of having a dual boot system with XP and BT3 that worked perfect, Windows XP crashed as it does
so i reinstalled it and tried running #lilo in BT3 to fix the lilo bootloader didnt work so I started over deleted the partitions and made a new one for windows XP it was NTFS roughly 75% of my hdd like the last time i did it but this time after installing windows XP and running
qtparted in BT3 it stated:
Warning: Unable to open /dev/hdc read-write (Read-only file system). /dev/hdc has been opened read-only.
at this point i thought it was a little strange i went about making the EXT3 partition and got the following message:
"ntfs file systems is not implemented yet"
Error: Filesystem has incompatible features enabled
so i stayed up till around 4am trying different partition configurations & reinstalling windows XP. I tried everything I could imagine from changing the primary partition to FAT32 and only making it 20 gig, using chkdsk also tried changing AHCI mode in my BIOS i got the same annoying error as last time then i thought my hdd may be screwed so i brought a new one i still have the same issue.
If any one can help me it would be really nice, it did work on my current system just weeks earlier, if anyone needs any more info i will supply it.
Thank you SOOOOO much. These
Thank you SOOOOO much.
These instructions are so simple. I followed them and everything worked perfectly.
I will say that i could not get BACKTRACK3 to work like this... BUT this is a problem/bug with BACKTRACK not your instructions.
So once again... THANK YOU! :-)
Did you download parted and
Did you download parted and qtparted correctly and use pkgtool to install? If so, there has to be some output, what does it tell you when you type qtparted, if it says file not found you may have not used package tool write or the file is in the wrong directory, you can find something like that by typing: "which qtparted". Just let me know what it tells you.
Can somebody help me I've
Can somebody help me I've got a problem with installing qtparted and parted. The problem is after #pkgtool. When I installed it and i write qtparted in the commando line the programme doesn't start. And how should i boot it? I always boot with copy to ram
Yes it is always best
Yes it is always best practice, especially in a developers opinion not to use beta software in production environments. That being said, beta releases are made to be tested and improved. If you just want to test the software installation out and are concerned that there may be some adverse affects on your hardware or primary operating system BACK UP YOUR DATA. However we have been able to successful install BT3 beta on many machines without an issue that couldn't be easily resolved. Hat's off to the development team over at Remote Exploit/Offensive Security.

guys be advised that bt3
guys be advised that bt3 beta is still under devoloping stage , beta is for bugs report or hardware issues and its not complete yet and dont try to use installer GUI in bt3 cuz if u notice its not tested . i personally will just wait for the final release to come out .
Now hosting the tgz files
Now hosting the tgz files here due to the inconsistency of the links, hope this helps some of you.

finally got the QTPARTED
finally got the QTPARTED link to work and everything went sorta smooth i installed via your instructions all worked out till i got into backtrack3 and i couldn't mount or access my partition where bt3 was installed because a security policy stopped me i found a way to bypass it with my last installation that was kinda screwed but this one wouldn't let me use trickery to do it probably because it was working properly this time around
but i booted off the BT3 disc again after installation and located hal.conf on sda2
and added these lines to the last policy
(!..Allow members of the 'Plugdev' group to mount volumes --)

sorry the symbols < and > are replaced with ( and )
hope this helps anyone with the same problem you will need to add some more lines to get access to floppy disks and cd roms which you will find on the net your instructions for dual boot work pretty well r00tk1ll when the QTPARTED link works you just need a little bit more info for n00bies like myself thanks anyways. still have problems with adding users and changing passwords
